week of 9/24-9/28

This week we…

·         Explored “What is Art?” By looking at a variety of artists, styles, and creative ideas that we could apply to our writing/drawing.

·         Created a book titled “I See”, we wrote and illustrated the book, using shapes as the foundation for our drawing.  Look for it in our writer’s portfolio.

·         Worked with a partner to create a number poster, that shows the different ways numbers can be displayed.  Come see our work!

·         Learned about the letter “Tt”. We call it “tongue tapping T”.

·         Learned new playground games from the 6th graders!

Newsletter 9/20

This week we…

·         Studied shapes: square, triangle, trapezoid, rhombus, hexagon, and rectangle. We found them in nature and in school.  We are exploring how different shapes can work together to create new shapes and designs.

·         We learned the word: “see” and the letter “Rr”.  We reviewed the letters “Ss” and “Mm”.  Please work with your child on recognizing and writing these letters and sounds.

·         Talked about identifying our favorite part of a book, or event and capturing that in our writing.

·         We started to learn about rhyming words. We defined rhyming as; two words that sound the same, but are not the same word.

·         Learned that the number zero “0” means nothing, by eating marshmallows.

·         Your child’s writing portfolio is in their cubby in the hallway.  We will pull selected work to add to it, monthly.  Their other work will come home in their Thursday folder.

·         No School: Friday, September  21st: Assessment Day for teachers.

·         If you would like to volunteer in our classroom please let me know, we always appreciate the support!

This week we…
·         Learned the parts of a book cover: Author: wrote the book, Illustrator: drew the pictures, Title: the name of the book, Picture: gives a hint about the story, Spine: the skinny part that holds the book together.
·         Reviewed the letter S, and learned about the letter M. When making the M, mmm sound our lips are sealed, there is no air.  We also practiced writing capital M, and lower case m.

Back to School Night Presentation

Hi Parents!  I am new to this blogging thing and I have tried to figure out a way to post my Back to School Night Presentation to the blog, but I cannot seem to figure out how to do it.  So if you would like a copy of the presentation, email me jennie_clarke@dpsk12.org and I will email it to you, that is probably the easiest way.  Thank you for those who were able to attend for joining us last night.  If you ever have questions or concerns please call or email me!  Thank you and have a great weekend.

Our first week

Parents:  We had a great first few days of school.  We are learning how to navigate our school and our classroom.  Our classroom is getting to know each other.  We decorated a drum where we put our classroom rules, and we signed with our hand print and name.
As a classroom we decided our rules are:
  1. We will be "Good": Following "The Plan" on the carpet - sitting criss-cross applesauce, our eyes are up front, and we will be listening.
  2. We will be "Nice": Treating others how we want to be treated.
    1. Sharing and including everyone!
  3. We will be "Safe": Making safe choices with our bodies, hands and words.
Because of our dedication to the arts, students will have a double block of specials.  After lunch students go to either Art or Library/Technology, and then they go to either Drama or Theater; we alternate days between Blue and White days.

Pictures will soon be following!  I am so excited for this year of learning and growing together as a community.  If you ever have questions, or concerns please let me know!  I can be reached via email: jennie_clarke@dpsk12.org or (720)424-0179
